Multiple businesses damaged after overnight strip mall fire in southeast Edmonton. Hiba Kamal-Choufi has more.

Shop owners of several businesses in a south Edmonton strip mall woke up to the news of an early morning fire that might have possibly damaged their businesses.

The strip mall at 34 Avenue and 92 Street was seen taped off Tuesday morning after the blaze.

“It’s an absolute tragedy. A lot of businesses are affected next door as well,” said Kirat Bawa, the owner of Diamond Motors.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services says crews responded to the commercial structure fire around 12:40 a.m. Crews called a second-alarm fire at 12:47 a.m. to bring in additional units for support; approximately 40 firefighters were at the scene.

It took about two hours to douse the flames. Some crews still remained on scene late Tuesday morning to ensure the fire was extinguished.

The strip mall has several businesses, including restaurants, grocery stores, a travel agency, and a dental clinic.

Multiple businesses are left wondering what’s next, like the owner of Choice Travel and Tours, Kamal Khinda, who has been in the area for over 20 years. He said he’d never seen a fire like this before.

“The flames were really, really high going. The whole building is gone. Upstairs is damaged. Everything. We saw the flames coming from the other end of the building upstairs and the back of the building as well,” Khinda explained.

“Well it’s tough to see all this because a lot of people [affected]. We’re all in this together. We’ll get through this.”

Officials say no one was injured, but several businesses were left charred and damaged.

“It a great loss. I just built our office a couple of years ago and spent a a lot of money on it and now you know I don’t know how long it’s gonna take,” said Harpreet Khinda, of Choice Immigration Services.

Bawa adding, “A few vehicles people were gonna come and see today anyways. We’re gonna pause those and see if we can replace them or we lose a customer. Either way, it’s a terrible situation everybody’s in right now.”

Investigators are working to determine the cause.
