Driver killed after colliding with construction platform on highway west of Edmonton: police

Police say a 44-year-old man from Spruce Grove is dead after his vehicle struck a scissor lift work platform on the highway just west of Edmonton early Thursday morning.

Parkland RCMP say the collision happened around 2:42 a.m. on westbound Highway 16 near the Highway 60 overpass.

Investigators say the man was driving west when his SUV struck the stationary platform. A construction worker was in the bucket of the scissor lift and needed to be hospitalized with serious injuries.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the west and eastbound lanes of Highway 16 were closed Thursday morning, with traffic being directed to the off-ramps.
