Edmonton police charge boy, 16, with murder in shooting death of teenage girl

Police say a 16-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of a teenage girl of the same age.

The 16-year-old girl died after being found seriously injured at a townhouse near 139 Avenue and 32 Street on Sunday morning shortly before 7 a.m. Officers were responding to reports of a shooting.

An autopsy completed Wednesday determined she died of a gunshot wound, and her death was a homicide.

Edmonton police have yet to reveal any circumstances surrounding the shooting, saying the investigation is ongoing.

Because the accused is a minor, his name is protected by Canadian law. The Youth Criminal Justice Act also limits the ability to report the victim’s name.

Residents in the Hairsine neighbourhood, where the shooting happened, told CityNews Tuesday they remain shaken by the early-morning shooting.

“We heard people screaming and asking for help and stuff like that,” said resident Iqra Ali.

“It is not safe. Especially we have kids around here, playing around here. They can’t even go outside because they’re scared of what they heard from the news, and especially it’s very close to us.”

The Edmonton Police Service says the girl’s shooting is part of a concerning trend of youth violence.

“While an arrest has been made, this case highlights the devastating consequences of youth violence and the importance of continued efforts by families, schools, community organizations, and law enforcement to support young people and prevent violence before it occurs,” Staff Sgt. Rob Bilawey said in a news release.

“I think what is alarming with this is there are firearms involved, and they are happening in public places these murders. And I think that is very concerning,” EPS Chief Warren Driechel told CityNews on Tuesday.
