$27.9M upgrades coming to Whitemud Drive west of Edmonton

The Whitemud Drive will be expanding west of Edmonton.

The two-lane highway, north of the River Cree, is getting the necessary funding to become a four-lane road.

The City of Edmonton, Government of Alberta and the Enoch Cree Nation are each taking on one-third of the $27.9 million price tag.

“This is not a grant, but I am going to stress to the federal government that they need to contribute as well,” said Enoch Cree Nation Chief Cody Thomas.

Drivers have long told CityNews the narrow stretch of road is dangerous, with little room for error.

“We’ve lost a lot of members on this road,” said Enoch Cree Nation councillor Charlton Thomas. “It’s very dangerous. I myself don’t travel it during the winter time. I’m a good driver myself, but sometimes I don’t trust the other drivers.”

The project is still in the design phase, with construction tentatively scheduled for later this year and into 2027.
