An Edmonton woman is speaking out after she lost two of her brothers in a span of two weeks.
Natasha Canas’ 22-year-old brother Geovani Ray Robbins was stabbed to death at a Walmart in Montreal Tuesday.
Robbins was expected to fly to Edmonton for the funeral of their 25-year-old brother, who died unexpectedly on May 26.
Montreal police have charged three 15-year-olds in connection with Robbins’ death.
Canas says she is worried that her brother’s alleged killers may use his past to get off easily.
According to Montreal police, Robbins had recently been released from prison, after pleading guilty to stealing from a Maxi near Montreal and assaulting a woman during the same event.
“It just looks to me like they’re portraying him as a bad guy, and I know that sometimes with social media, that type of image, can make the court maybe not get, maybe those kids won’t get the sentence that they deserve,” Canas said.
Canas says she wants the public to know about the version of the brother she knew and hopes that by speaking up for him, the family can see justice.
“He’s a human being. His past doesn’t define who he is. He had family. He’s loved. He’s not just some person out there that nobody loves and that this is okay,” Canas said.
Canas says she wants the teenagers to be tried as adults and says she plans to travel to Montreal for the trial.
