Edmonton public schools cancel international trips, exchange programs

Students of Edmonton public schools will not be travelling overseas next year for school trips or exchange programs, the Edmonton Public Schools Board(EPSB) said.

In a statement to CityNews, EPSB spokesperson Kim Smith, said, “Amid a complex global landscape of evolving political, economic and public health challenges, the pause in international travel prioritizes student and staff safety and well-being.”

Smith said previously approved trips to Thailand, France, the U.K. and Portugal for the school year 2026-27 have all been cancelled.

“We know students and families will be disappointed. These trips can be the highlight of a student’s school year. Making this decision now allows schools and families to adjust their plans and explore other opportunities, especially those within Canada,” Smith said.

Smith added that EPSB will monitor the global situation and review the decision next year.
