Police say the death of a 68-year-old man in central Edmonton in July, originally regarded as suspicious, has now been deemed non-criminal in nature following an autopsy.
On the morning of July 21, officers responded to reports of an assault during an altercation at a home near 93 Street and 116 Avenue.
When police arrived, they found an injured 68-year-old man. He was treated and transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he died.
A 48-year-old man who knew the victim was arrested and later released.
An autopsy the day after the man’s death could not determine a cause and manner of death, pending further testing.
“The medical examiner has since determined the manner of death was not criminal,” Edmonton police said in a news release.
“Homicide investigators consulted with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service regarding the possibility of laying charges, and have determined that there is no likelihood of conviction due to the evidence that the death was not criminal.”
