A mother from Fort McMurray is facing drug and child endangerment charges after allegedly exposing her toddler to drug trafficking activity.
The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) says the mother was already under investigation when authorities allegedly observed her conducting a drug transaction in the company of her child.
Police allege a subsequent search of the suspect’s home led to 25 grams of cocaine being seized, including near the child’s toys and play area. Alberta Children and Family Services was notified.
“It is incomprehensible to bring a child to a drug deal and expose them to this level of risk. Upon learning this information, we prioritized this investigation to ultimately get this child out of harm’s way,” said ALERT Staff Sgt. Mark Wait.
The mother was charged Oct. 31 with drug trafficking; possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking; and causing a child to be in a need of intervention.
She was also charged under Alberta’s Drug-Endangered Children Act, which authorizes intervention in cases of children living in drug houses or exposed to drug manufacturing or other forms of illegal drug activity. She is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
ALERT says it is not revealing the mother’s name to protect the identity of the child.
The allegations have not been tested in court.
