Alberta RCMP investigating threat made to school west of Edmonton

Police in Hinton say they are investigating after a message written on a wall threatened a school in the town west of Alberta’s capital.

Hinton RCMP say there has been no confirmation of an imminent threat to a specific location. Police, which were made aware of the message on Tuesday, did not reveal the nature of the threat.

Police say “all precautions are being taken” with regards to the message, including conducting additional patrols around the schools in Hinton and monitoring social media.

“Should the situation change, the schools, parents and public will be advised,” RCMP wrote in a news release.

Police say a school in Hinton decided to cancel classes for the day as a result.

“This was an initiative taken by the school out of an abundance of caution,” according to Mounties.

“Hinton RCMP understands the stress related to these kinds of threats and school attendance is the prerogative of the parents and they should do what makes them feel safest.”

That school was identified by parents on social media as Father Gerard Redmond Catholic School, part of the Evergreen Catholic School Division.

In a letter to parents, Father Gerard Redmond Catholic School says the decision was made to ensure it maintains a “safe learning environment.”

A review of school safety measures is underway, authorities add.

Hinton RCMP’s general investigation section is investigating.
