Police seek damaged SUV linked to fatal south Edmonton shooting of father, son

By News Staff

Edmonton police are looking for a suspect vehicle they believe is linked to the fatal daylight shooting of a father and his son outside a fast-food restaurant last year.

Harpreet Uppal, 41, and his 11-year-old son Gavin were killed Nov. 9, 2023, while parked outside an A&W at Ellerslie Road and 50 Street.

Edmonton Police Service homicide detectives are searching for a green 2005-2007 Nissan X-Trail with “distinctive” damage along the passenger side – including a horizontal dent along the rear bumper and a rust spot over the rear passenger tire.

Police provided images of the suspect vehicle Wednesday.

EPS believe the suspects were in the X-Trail shortly after the shooting.

“We are hopeful that someone recognizes this vehicle or recalls seeing it recently and we encourage them to come forward,” said Staff Sgt. Rob Bilawey with the EPS homicide section in a news release.

“Investigators are confident the vehicle will still contain valuable evidence, even after the passage of time.”

Police have also been looking for another suspect vehicle: a black BMW SUV.

In surveillance video released in November, in the days following the fatal shooting, a passenger can be seen exiting that vehicle, then the driver. Both run out of the video’s frame, then can be seen running back. The vehicle then drives away.

Police say the father and son were deliberately killed. A second boy was also in the car at the time of the shooting and was not physically harmed.

Edmonton police have said Uppal had drug and gang connections; he was previously targeted in a 2021 restaurant shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to contact EPS at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
