The province has fenced off the 96 Street shared-use path near the Old Remand Centre to make room for demolition work next month.
A spokesperson for Alberta Infrastructure says the removal of hazardous material has already begun on the concrete building.
In February 2023, the province said it would not be cost-effective to retrofit the building and decided to demolish it.
“Fiscal responsibility matters and demolishing this unused facility is the best choice for Alberta’s bottom line. We will be saving tax dollars on the upkeep of an old, empty building, while opening the door for future development opportunities for downtown Edmonton,” said Nathan Neudorf, the Minister of Infrastructure at the time of the announcement.

The City of Edmonton says those looking to get around the fenced-off area can check out the Discover YEG map.
Adding a bike route is available for cyclists from the shared pathway along the Capitol LRT line bike paths leading to downtown Edmonton on 103A Avenue or 102A Avenue.
