Province to demolish old Remand Centre

By CityNews Staff

A downtown eyesore will soon be no more.

The provincial government confirmed it’s taking the wrecking ball to the old Remand Centre.

The concrete building at 104 Avenue and 96 Street, last held inmates in 2013.

Some have floated the idea of using it as a homeless shelter.

However, the province says it would not be cost-effective to retrofit it for that purpose.

“Fiscal responsibility matters and demolishing this unused facility is the best choice for Alberta’s bottom line. We will be saving tax dollars on the upkeep of an old, empty building, while opening the door for future development opportunities for downtown Edmonton,” said Nathan Neudorf, Minister of Infrastructure in a statement.

Demolition is expected to be complete by 2025, with the property to be sold or used for alternative use.

The province is spending $1 million annually in upkeep costs.
