Edmonton police are warning people about a man they say sold stolen vehicles and trailers online.
The Edmonton Police Service says the accused may have used online marketplaces and fake documents to sell the items, “at times operating through legitimate businesses.”
Authorities say they located a trailer in April that had been fraudulently listed for sale online and that had its vehicle identification number (VIN) tampered with. A VIN is a unique code used to identify motor vehicles.
Police say that led to a search warrant in May where officers recovered $50,000 in allegedly stolen property such as trailers, motorcycles, dirt bikes, and ATVs.
“Many of the recovered items showed signs of VIN defacement or alteration; a tactic known as ‘re-vinning’ that is used to disguise stolen property for resale,” EPS said in a news release.
Peter Fryer, 68, was arrested on May 26 and is facing charges including possession of stolen property, trafficking stolen property over $5,000, tampering with VIN, uttering a forged document, and fraud. The allegations against him have not been tested in court.
“We recognize that some people may have unknowingly purchased vehicles or trailers they believed were legitimate, when in fact they were stolen and re-vinned. Those individuals are victims in this as well,” said EPS Const. Kailyn Bellmond. “If you’ve had any dealings with this individual, we encourage you to come forward.”
