‘Uneventful evening’ for police: Oilers fans too heartbroken to riot

Edmonton Police say even with and estimate 33,000 people packed into the Ice District for Game 7, it was an uneventful evening with minimal arrests. Carly Robinson speaks with criminologist Dan Jones about what’s changed from the 2006 Oilers cup run.

Around 33,000 Oilers fans made their way to Rogers Place and the Ice District to watch Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday night.

Edmonton police say they were on standby just in case Oilers fans got the idea to repeat what Canucks fans did in 2011, or what Canadiens have done on countless occasions — cause a riot.

Despite this, Edmonton police confirmed to CityNews Tuesday morning that they had a “fairly uneventful evening from a policing perspective… and sadly from a hockey perspective also.”

EPS says they didn’t have to deal with many incidents throughout the playoffs.

“Edmonton fans represented their team and city with class throughout the playoffs,” said EPS in a statement.

Police say bars along Whyte Avenue and Jasper Avenue were full, and no issues occurred at any pub.

Despite being fairly uneventful, EPS did have to deal with eight incidents during the night.

Five people were taken into custody for intoxication in the Ice District. Three people overdosed, however, EPS say two did walk away and refused further treatment. Lastly, one person was taken into custody for mischief.
