AHS announces an end to Edmonton’s shigella outbreak

By News Staff

Edmonton’s shigella outbreak is over.

Alberta health services say that there were 206 confirmed cases of the disease since mid-august. Of those, 139 people wound up in hospital.

Shigella can cause diarrhea, fever, nausea and stomach cramps. It can be spread by contaminated food or coming into contact with fecal matter from an infected person.

Alberta Health Services says that sharing health guidance and mobilizing resources helped curb the spread. However, they do expect sporadic cases in the months ahead.
