Company behind Edmonton’s LRT extension fined $120,000 in workplace injury case

The company building Edmonton’s light rail transit (LRT) extension project was fined after the company pled guilty in a workplace injury case.

The Edmonton Court of Justice ordered Marigold Infrastructure Partners to pay $120,000 after a construction worker was seriously injured while working on the Edmonton Valley West Line project in June 2023.

Workers were said to have been completing the post-tensioning of a segment of the LRT line when the worker in his 40s was struck by an equipment.

On Tuesday, the company pled guilty to a charge of failing to ensure equipment safety as required by the province’s Occupational Safety and Health Code (OHS).

Following the company’s guilty plea, the Crown withdrew 13 other counts and other OHS violation charges against related companies.

The company and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the court’s decision.
