ASIRT looking into man’s injuries following EPS arrest

Alberta’s police watchdog — the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) — is looking into an incident where injuries were reported following an arrest.

ASIRT says it was notified of the March 21 incident regarding a hotel employee calling police to report a man who appeared to be intoxicated and was refusing to leave the lobby.

Police arrived at the hotel near 100 Avenue and 104 Street just before 3 a.m. They say the man was inside the hotel and refused to leave. When they tried taking him into custody, he reportedly resisted, was brought to the ground, and one of the officers used a conducted energy weapon on the man to be able to handcuff him.

After the arrest, the man told the officers his arm was hurting, so the officers called paramedics, who then took the man to a hospital. ASIRT says at this time, the extent of the man’s injuries is unknown.

Due to the nature of the incident, EPS informed the Police Review Commission of the matter, which directed ASIRT to begin an investigation.
