Police are trying to determine how a loaded firearm ended up on the ground near a pond in west Edmonton’s Secord neighbourhood last week, and they’re looking to identify a man believed to be connected to the case.
The Edmonton Police Service says a father and his daughter were walking near the pond on the evening of March 11 when the girl kicked a blue rag that was on the ground. Underneath the rag was a loaded 9 mm handgun, police say.
“Finding a firearm in a public space can be alarming, especially when children are nearby. Thankfully, no one was injured,” said Staff Sgt. Dan Furman in a news release.
“If you ever come across a firearm, ammunition or explosives, do not touch or move the items. Do not attempt to transport them to a police station yourself. Instead, call police so officers can safely secure them, which is exactly what this family did.”
Investigators have since obtained security footage from the area – from March 8 at 5:34 a.m. – which they say shows a man exiting a white car carrying a blue rag.
On Wednesday, EPS shared with the public a still image of the man and the vehicle.
Authorities are asking residents of Secord to review their security and dash cameras from March 8 between 5-6 a.m.
