Edmonton Filipino community dances for holidays inside grocery store

In Filipino culture, there’s nothing better than a party. For the holidays, a national grocery store is bringing the music inside their locations. James Dunn has one night in Edmonton.

Seafood City on Stony Plain Road is part of the national chain’s Late Night Madness event, a series that has been gaining traction since it launched in the U.S. in October for Filipino American History Month.

For a few hours, a DJ sets up in the middle of the store, blasting music as people dance the night away.
Despite the party atmosphere, the store remains fully operational, with customers eating street food and getting in some late-night shopping.

The event is infused with holiday spirit, and celebrations hold a special place in Filipino culture.

“We Filipinos love singing, dancing, and in our country we have lots of parties,” said Jeffrey Tongcua, assistant manager of Seafood City Edmonton. “This is a perfect time with the winter, so we want to bring those parties here to Canada so everyone has a place to party.”

Seafood City says the events will continue across the country through December, with upcoming stops in Calgary and Edmonton.
