Canadian payroll software, Alberta bank partner to support small businesses

A new software by ATB with NMBR, a payroll software, will help streamline the finances of small businesses through automation. With a business owner seeing an improvement in time. Our Leo Cruzat reports.

Since 2016, Tasha Still has helped run Bruins Painting in Stony Plain. In just nine years, they’ve had their ups and downs, especially with the fluctuating price of supplies and paints, adding pressure to their small business.

“It’s stressful. So you’re managing your expenses. You’re managing your pricing, and then on top of all of that, you have all the regular day-to-day,” said Still.

But Still says some of the stress of the day-to-day is gone thanks to the automation of her payroll. She’s taking part in a new partnership between a Canadian company and ATB Financial, saying that what used to take over an hour has been cut down.

“I would say it only takes me about five minutes every two weeks now, so it has saved me a big chunk of time,” said Still.

Simon Bourgeois, the CEO of NMBR, says, “By having a tool that’s directly related to their finances embedded directly in that banking platform, it’s going to reduce context switching, reduce the amount of friction that it takes in order to onboard the payroll, as well as run payroll.”

Bourgeois says almost one-third of businesses in the world, including Canadian ones, are spending 30 hours a week manually managing payroll, calculating and filing taxes using multiple systems. The automated tool will help calculate the money going to the staff and the government.

“It’s really prone to error when you’re doing it manually. It’s also really time-consuming,” said Bourgeois.

Still says, “I can use that time instead to do things that matter more. Spending more time on social media and marketing so that we can make sure that we’re attracting those clients that we need.”

This partnership is the first of its kind in Canada. Bourgeois hopes this will pave the way to more streamlined operations for small businesses.
