Four longtime Alberta New Democrat members, including a former Calgary city councillor, won’t be seeking re-election in 2027.
Three of those members, Joe Ceci, Marlin Schmidt, and Lori Sigurdson, were first elected in 2015 when the NDP won majority support to form government. Dr. Luanne Metz, the NDP chair of The Future of Health, was elected in 2023.
The four are expected to stay until the end of their current term, and 21 candidates have already been nominated for the next provincial election.
Meanwhile, NDP leader Naheed Nenshi thanked them for their contributions.
“There is no doubt they will continue to contribute to their communities in meaningful ways in the years ahead. On behalf of our entire caucus, we thank them for their service and wish them every success in their next chapter,” he said.
According to a news release Saturday, the announcement came from the NDP’s spring provincial council meeting.
Calgary-Buffalo MLA Ceci was the minister of finance under former Premier Rachel Notley, and was on Calgary city council for 15 years as the Ward 9 representative.
Schmidt, the member of Edmonton-Gold Bar, was the minister of advanced education under Notley before Sigurdson, the member of Edmonton-Riverview, was moved to the ministry of seniors and housing.
Metz, who represents Calgary-Varsity, was a professor at the University of Calgary and a researcher before she ventured into politics. The NDP say she helped shape the party’s “vision for strengthening the province’s public health-care system,” and will continue to do so after her departure.
This marks several MLAs who have opted not to run for re-election between the United Conservatives and the Alberta NDP in the past six months.
UCP government members Nate Horner and Matt Jones both said they are not planning to run for re-election, which came amid talks of a separation referendum being announced in the province. Horner and Jones both expressed that they didn’t think it was a good idea.
The finance, hospital and surgical health services minister roles were filled shortly after by Jason Nixon and Adriana LaGrange, respectively.
Additionally, former MLA Rebecca Schulz announced she would step down in December 2025 and finished her time in cabinet in May.
The opposition says nomination dates for the four NDP ridings are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
