Ward sipiwiyiniwak race flips following Edmonton Elections recount

Thu Parmar now the reported winner in Ward sipiwiyiniwak.

On Wednesday evening, the city’s website posted a win for Parmar with 30.36 per cent of the votes over Friesen’s 27.5 per cent. The results showed Parmar finished ahead of Friesen by about 627 votes.

Off the initial count, Darrell Firesen narrowly defeated Thu Parmar by six votes (6,060 – 6,054).

The recount was initiated by the Returning Officer after a potential administrative or technical error was identified. During the process, Edmonton Elections also conducted ballot accounting for all races, including Ward sipiwiyiniwak. Both the recount and ballot accounting confirmed a human error in the original recording of counted votes.

All results from the 2025 Edmonton Election will undergo ballot accounting before the official statement of results is released at noon on Friday, Oct. 24.
