Poehling wins Game 4 in overtime for Anaheim, giving Ducks a 3-1 series lead

Ryan Poehling was the overtime hero for the Anaheim Ducks in Game 4 against the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night.

The Oilers entered Game 4, looking to bounce back from back-to-back losses, and Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch opted to sit Connor Ingram and start Tristan Jarry.

The game would be a back-and-forth contest that ended up going to overtime.

Just two and a half minutes into overtime, the Ducks thought they put the puck into the net, and it slowly slid behind Jarry. Oilers’ defender Connor Murphy tried to stop the puck under Jarry’s skate, which led to a conversation between the officials. Following the conversation, the officials called the play a good goal, which led to a review.

Following a lengthy review, the officials would confirm that the puck fully crossed the line, giving the Ducks the win and a 3-1 series lead. Ryan Poehling would get credited for the goal after he threw the puck towards the front of the net, and it bounced off Darnell Nurse towards the net.

The goal would be a hot topic of conversation for analysts following the game, with Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman saying, “No idea how they could call it a goal on the ice.”

As for the rest of the game, it took just 38 seconds for the scoring to open in Game 4. Kasperi Kapanen would fire a slapper past Lukas Dostal to give the Oilers the early lead.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would double the Oilers’ lead, firing a low wrister and getting a good bounce off Ducks’ defender Pavel Mintyukov to beat Dostal.

In the second period on a power play, Cutter Gauthier would get the Ducks on the board with a hard wrist shot into the top of the net.

Late in the second on another power play, the Ducks would work the puck into the slot, and Josh Samanski would put it past Jarry to make it 2-2.

Evan Bouchard would regain the lead for the Oilers on a third period power play. Bouchard’s shot was a laser over Dostal’s shoulder.

The Ducks were looking to tie the game up again and were able to with six and a half minutes remaining in the third, when John Carlson’s shot from the blueline got stopped by traffic in front of Jarry, before bouncing to Jeffery Viel, who dove to the ice and put the puck into the net.

Jarry would make 34 saves on 38 shots, while Dostal made 24 saves on 27 shots.

The Oilers will look to keep their season alive back at home for Game 5 on April 28.
