4 Mounties fired on man holding BB gun in RCMP Strathcona County parking lot: ASIRT

The man who was shot by police in the secure parking lot of the Strathcona County detachment last week was in possession of a BB gun, Alberta’s police watchdog is saying.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is providing more details on the July 28 shooting by Strathcona County RCMP.

ASIRT says an officer spotted the man with a weapon in the fenced-off parking lot and broadcast that information over the police radio.

“Several other officers entered the secure parking lot, located the man and provided verbal direction to the man. Four officers discharged their firearms, striking the man multiple times,” ASIRT said in a news release Tuesday.

The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he remains. He is expected to survive.

No officers were injured, ASIRT says.

The province’s police watchdog is examining the officers’ use of force.
