Grande Prairie RCMP say its officers were involved in an officer-involved shooting, killing a man deemed an “erratic driver” after they say he pulled a gun Friday.
It happened just before midnight when Mounties located the driver, and while trying to stop the vehicle, the driver fled the scene. However, he got stuck in the mud.
When police attempted to interact with him, they allege he pulled out a firearm, leading to at least one officer firing his weapon, striking the man.
Police say the officers attempted life-saving efforts, but he died on the scene. The officers suffered no injuries.
RCMP says it informed the director of law enforcement and began its internal review process. It also contacted the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), an independent agency tasked with investigating police shootings in the province.
“Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the member’s duty status will be subject to review,” Mounties said. “The RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT.”
