Edmonton police officer struck by alleged impaired driver during unrelated operation

Edmonton police say an officer who works with a specially trained police dog was struck by an impaired driver during a stolen vehicle investigation two weeks ago.

The Edmonton Police Service says officers were responding to report of a stolen vehicle from a convenience store near 23 Avenue and 56 Street just after 1:30 p.m. on June 27.

By tracking a cell phone left inside the vehicle, police say they were able to find it in an alley near 106 Street and 106A Avenue.

When officers and a police dog moved in to arrest the driver and passenger, the canine officer was struck by a vehicle. He was taken to the hospital with a serious, non-life-threatening injury that required surgery.

The police dog also sustained minor injuries, though police expect it to make a full recovery.

Police allege the 77-year-old driver of that vehicle was impaired. Tomas Rodriguez has been charged with impaired operation causing bodily harm, and impaired operation with a blood alcohol concentration equal to or exceeding 80mg%.

The suspects in the original stolen vehicle investigation, 33-year-old Colby Comeau and 29-year-old Jesse McFawn, are also facing charges.

None of the charges have been tested in court.
