Man killed in fatal collision involving semi-truck on Whitemud Drive; 4-year-old girl not injured

Edmonton police say a 39-year-old man was killed when he exited his vehicle on the side of the highway and was struck by a semi-truck on Tuesday afternoon.

The Edmonton Police Service says it happened on Whitemud Drive eastbound at 111 Street, just south of Southgate Mall, around 1:30 p.m.

Investigators believe the man’s van was stopped on the shoulder when he stepped out to check on his vehicle, at which point he was hit by the truck. He was declared dead at the scene.

A four-year-old girl who was inside the van was not injured. She was taken to the Stollery Children’s Hospital for precautionary reasons.

Edmonton police previously mistakenly said the victim was a woman, and that the child was a boy, but corrected that information on Wednesday morning. They also apologized for the mistake.

At the scene Tuesday, the van could be seen with significant damage to its side, while the semi-truck was on the embankment.

The collision caused heavy traffic on Whitemud, with cars being rerouted from the scene.
