Man killed after being hit while inspecting vehicle on Wayne Gretzky Drive

As Edmonton Police investigate a fatal collision that happened Thursday — when a vehicle struck and killed a 41-year-old man on the side of the road, those driving tow trucks are pleading with drivers to slow down and be aware.

Edmonton police are investigating a fatal collision that happened on Thursday morning on Wayne Gretzky Drive.

Around 11:50 a.m. on May 21, officers responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision just north of the 106 Avenue exit ramp.

It is believed that a 2007 Ford F550 was driving south on Wayne Gretzky Drive when the driver pulled over in the neutral space between the 106 Avenue off-ramp lane and the remaining southbound lanes and walked to the back of his vehicle.

While the driver was inspecting his truck, a 2025 Ford F350 that was also travelling south, collided with the driver. Police responded to the scene, and the 41-year-old man was declared dead at the scene.

An investigation into the collision is underway; however, police do not believe that speed or alcohol were a factor.

Police are asking if anyone has any information regarding the collision, to contact investigators at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
