Urgent care services resuming at East Edmonton Health Centre after water leak

The urgent care clinic (UCC) at the East Edmonton Health Centre is reopening Tuesday, one month after being shut down because of a water leak.

Urgent care services were suspended March 21 due to the leak, which Alberta Health Services said “required remediation and construction activities.”

“Remediation and cleaning are now complete,” AHS said in a news release Tuesday.

The health centre’s family care clinic is also returning to regular service hours and will transition from virtual appointments back to in-person services.

“Alberta Health Services recognizes extended closures can be stressful for patients seeking care, and thanks the community for its patience as we completed this unplanned and necessary work,” AHS said.

The clinic was initially only scheduled to be closed for a few days for cleanup, but that stretched to more than four weeks.

A notice on the AHS website Tuesday indicated the urgent care centre (UCC) at the Edmonton health centre was dealing with “higher than normal volumes of patients, including those presenting with complex and serious cases requiring increased attention from physicians and staff.”

“When clinic capacity limits are reached, the UCC has to close earlier than usual,” the notice reads. “We apologize for the inconvenience this can cause and encourage the public to call the UCC before arrival to check if the site remains open to new patients.”

The East Edmonton Health Centre is a primary-care facility that offers outpatient care.
