Edmonton police issue warning over copper wire theft from switching cubicles

By CityNews Staff

Edmonton police are issuing a warning regarding ongoing copper wire thefts and the tampering of switching cubicles within the city.

EPS says since December, they’ve received over 20 reports regarding switching cubicles in southwest Edmonton that had been tampered with in an effort to have copper wire stole from them.

Police say the cubicles are locked units that receive and distribute electricity and have been found to be left open with exposed live electrical wires after they have been broken into.

“As we continue to see a rise of copper wire theft and switching cubicle damage throughout southwest Edmonton, we are warning the public about the serious safety risks that these cubicles carry because of exposed live wires,” says A/S/Sgt. Marc Goudreau with the EPS’ Investigations Branch.

“If you come across a switching cubicle that has been broken into, please keep your distance and contact us immediately for assistance. The EPS will continue to work with utility providers across Edmonton to ensure that thefts and damages to electrical equipment are properly reported and investigated.”

Police urge anyone who sees a cubicle that has been tampered with to call them, and stay away from the unit for safety reasons.

Anyone who may have any information regarding the matter is asked to contact investigators at 780-423-4567.
