Solar power plants to be built in Lac la Biche

Three new solar power plants are going to be built in Lac la Biche thanks to an agreement between the Owl River Métis community and Culture Pathway Development Corporation.

It’s expected to be the centrepiece in a bigger-picture project that will expand to include data centers for AI and blockchain technology.

Even though Alberta has new rules on renewables, the project will not be affected, it will be built outside provincial buffer zones.

The development could create up to 800 construction jobs, and more permanent jobs after the build is complete, which is a big win in the eyes of the Owl River Métis community president.

“It’s going to bring jobs, opportunities, schooling, education, and medical, housing, and growth into Lac la Biche. It’s going to be huge for us,” said Jack Quintal, president of Owl River Métis Community Association.

The power plants are going to be built in a three-phase approach, starting with construction on the smallest solar plant kicking off around the start of 2026.

All three plants could be completed within the next three to five years.
