Thousands of breast cancer survivors and community members gathered in Edmonton for the annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure.
For the last few years, Valentin and his family have participated in the event in memory of his wife.
“I lost my wife two years ago. Her fight, we fight together and I know she will be happy to help somebody else to do that and be strong,” explained Valentin.
“It was extremely hard to lose my mom to this disease, but it brings me joy to see so many people who are survivors here and know that it’s possible,” said Roxana, who lost her mom to breast cancer.
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, one in eight women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
Jennifer Froese who was diagnosed with the disease seven months ago shared her journey with the crowd. She says being part of this event brings her hope that she’s not alone.
“Early on in my diagnosis, there was a lot of uncertainty and I was worried and I was frightened, but I also had hope. It’s lovely to be surrounded by not only by my own family and friends, but other people and see the hope and the support that’s everywhere today,” said Froese.
“I have a lot of hope for a healthy future.”
The 30th anniversary of the run was held at Foote Field on the University of Alberta’s south campus.
Organizers said the event saw over 2,700 participants and raised $600,000 in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.
“We grow by about 10 per cent a year and we’re thrilled with the participation this year. Money is raised for research, for treatment, for funding. We’re hoping that there will be a day that there will be a cure for breast cancer and we won’t have to run for everybody,” explained Kathy Zeissler, a volunteer at the CIBC Run for the Cure.
Roxana adding, “Just never give up hope. Stick with your family if you can. If you still have them, hug them close.”
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Canada, and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is the single largest fundraising event.
