The memory of two Edmonton police officers killed in the line of duty will live on in Alberta.
The province is honouring fallen constables Travis Jordan and Brett Ryan by naming twin bridges after them.
The bridges are on southwest Anthony Henday Drive over the North Saskatchewan River between Terwillegar Drive and Maskekosihk Trail. The eastbound bridge will be named after Jordan while the westbound bridge will be dedicated to Ryan.
Jordan and Ryan died in the line of duty on March 16, 2023, while responding to a domestic dispute.
“We are profoundly grateful for the decision to honour his legacy in this way and for knowing that his memory will be forever etched into the fabric of our community,” Jordan’s wife Annie said in a news release.
“We are overwhelmed with gratitude,” added Ryan’s wife Ashley.
Edmonton police Chief Dale McFee explains the thought that went into naming the bridges.
“The dedication of these two bridges, one carrying traffic west toward Brett’s hometown of Spruce Grove, and one east representing Travis’ ties to Nova Scotia, will forever tie the two together, symbolizing their enduring partnership,” McFee said.
While the name change is already in effect, memorial plaques will be installed in the summer.
