2 people in hospital after fire near Whyte Ave

A Tuesday morning fire near Whyte ave is under investigation. Edmonton police say the two individuals were injured after jumping from a second-storey window of the building on 80 Avenue and 107 Street.

Two people are recovering in hospital and at least 11 others were displaced after a fire at a residential building just off Whyte Avenue Tuesday morning.

Edmonton police say the two individuals were injured after jumping from a second-storey window of the building on 80 Avenue and 107 Street. They were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A captain with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services told CityNews crews were coming up Whyte Ave when they noticed black smoke in the air.

“We happened to be close, so we saw the smoke,” Adam Brimacombe said. “We actually responded to the smoke, not the calls.

“We were soon after dispatched to the fire. Once on scene, we saw that obviously the fire had vented itself – it was smoking at the back of the building.

“The rest of our crews showed up. We managed to get the fire put out.”

EPS officers were on the scene around 10:30 a.m., before fire crews, as they were responding to the report of an assault and a fire.

Officers assisted in evacuating tenants from other suites. Police tell CityNews “it appears that an assault did not occur.”

Brimacombe called the fire “pretty severe” but said no other buildings were damaged.

“We were lucky enough to have crews on scene quite quickly.”

Edmonton’s Emergency Management Response Team (ESRT) told CityNews they are supporting at least 11 people displaced – in addition to the two individuals sent to hospital.

The incident is under investigation.
