Train testing resuming on Valley Line SE downtown this week

By News Staff

Train testing is set to resume downtown on the Valley Line SE after it was paused earlier this summer, and a potential opening date may be revealed soon.

TransEd, the company building the rail line, paused testing in late June after finding signalling cables that needed to be replaced.

The City of Edmonton says testing will resume from the 102 Street stop to the Muttart stop later this week.

Cables were also replaced from the Davies Station to the Mill Woods stop, the city says, and testing resumed for that area last week.

Line-wide testing is expected to resume once all the new cables are installed.

The city and TransEd say they will have more information to share on a potential opening date for the Valley Line SE “as testing nears completion.”

The Valley Line LRT is a couple of years behind schedule; the opening has already been delayed several times.

Among the issues were a series of cracked pillars, and more recently drivers have been colliding with trains after illegally turning right on a red light.

The city is asking Edmontonians to obey all traffic signals, including those forbidding right turns on red at some LRT intersections.

“Pedestrians are reminded to only cross at designated pedestrian crossings and to wait to cross the road and tracks only when it is safe to do so.”

The Valley Line will be a 13-kilometre LRT once it is complete.
