Edmonton police make arrest in January homicide

The Edmonton Police Service says a 43-year-old man who was wanted for a homicide in central Edmonton in January, has been arrested.

EPS says on New Year’s Day, they responded to a reported sudden death at a home near 107 Avenue and 106 Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man dead. At the time, the man was not identified, and investigators were treating the death as suspicious.

An autopsy identified the man as 70-year-old Ronald Bell. The Edmonton Medical Examiner also stated the death could be ruled a homicide due to the cause of death, which Edmonton police withheld.

A couple days after Bell’s death, EPS released a video to the public showing Bell’s 2011 GMC Sierra on a street a couple blocks from his residence. The vehicle was declared missing by police.

The truck was later recovered by the Calgary Police Service, and at the time, officers noticed the truck had a stolen license plate from Spruce Grove.

In February an arrest warrant was issued for 43-year-old Donn Austin Gauthier in connection to Bell’s death.

EPS says officers were able to take Gauthier into custody on July 11, and he is facing charges of first-degree murder, arson, indignity to a body and breach recognize in relation to Mr. Bell’s death.
