Edmonton police say the young girl whose remains were found in Maskwacis last week was killed by “blunt impact trauma.”
The Edmonton Police Service says the eight-year-old girl was the victim of a homicide, following Monday’s autopsy.
The girl’s remains were located Saturday on Samson Cree Nation, five days after police responded to a welfare call related to the child at a home at 87 Avenue and 165 Street.
Once there, police said they were unable to find the girl and believed she was dead.
Three people have been charged in relation to her death.
A 27-year-old woman was charged with first-degree murder and indignity to a body. A 66-year-old man was charged with accessory to first-degree murder and indignity to a dead body. Both were charged on April 27.
On Saturday, a 25-year-old man was charged with accessory after the fact to murder and causing indignity to a dead body.
Police say all three accused were known to the girl.
“While the publication ban covers only the name of the victim, this investigation is complex, ongoing, and still in its early stages,” EPS said. “For these reasons, and to protect the identities of several other young children related to the deceased, at this time, the EPS is not disclosing the names of any accused people whose identity may lead to the identification of the surviving children.
“It is possible that additional disclosure beyond what the EPS is currently providing may be made in court documents.”
