Police locate young girl’s remains in Maskwacis; 3rd person charged

By News Staff

Police say they have located the remains of a young girl on Samson Cree Nation in Maskwacis, about an hour south of Edmonton.

Investigators say they are confident the remains are those of an eight-year-old girl they were searching for but can only confirm after Monday’s autopsy.

A third person was charged in relation to the eight-year-old’s death. A 25-year-old man was charged with accessory after the fact to murder and causing indignity to a dead body.

“We are grateful for the support of the RCMP and the Band leaders of Samson Cree Nation who helped facilitate the search and recovery of the remains,” said Staff Sgt. Colin Leathem with the EPS homicide section in a news release. “This is a significant development in the investigation, but we still have a lot more work to do.”

Two people were charged Thursday. A 27-year-old was charged with first-degree murder and indignity to a body, while a 66-year-old man was charged with accessory to first-degree murder and indignity to a dead body.

Police say all three accused were known to the girl.

Edmonton police say patrol officers responded to a welfare call related to the child at a home at 87 Avenue and 165 Street on Monday, but they were not able to find the girl and believed she was dead.

Police are not releasing the names of the suspects or the child to protect the identities of other children related to the girl.

The EPS says another update will be provided Monday after the autopsy.
