Makeshift firearms recovered from police-involved shooting in downtown Edmonton

By CityNews Staff

Alberta’s police watchdog has released more information on a police-involved shooting that killed a 55-year-old man last Friday in downtown Edmonton.

Witnesses saw the man sitting at a picnic table in front of Edmonton police headquarters and it is believed he was holding what appeared to be a handgun.

Officers confronted the man. While facing police, he walked backward towards the LRT line on 95 St, where police say they noticed what appeared to be a firearm with an extended barrel.

Officers talked with the suspect and attempted to de-escalate the situation. As the confrontation continued, police tasered the man twice, but he continued to back away from officers while holding the object that looked like a gun.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) then says, a few minutes after police tried to de-escalate the situation, four officers fired their guns. He died an hour later.
