Spring storm floods Calgary’s roads

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A spring storm hit Calgary Saturday evening, bringing with it heavy rain, lightning, hail, and flash flooding.

Major and minor roads all around the city saw flash floods that, in some cases, partially submerged vehicles.

Traffic travelling northbound on Deerfoot just after 32 Avenue saw five or six cars submerged.

Additionally, power outages occurred in some places across the city, knocking out traffic signals completely.

The most amount of flooding was seen in the city’s northeast.

“We (had) people stranded in intersections and under the overpasses because (the floods were) so impassable and so deep,” said CPS duty inspector Tom Hanson.

“It (was) pretty busy right. Our personnel (were) scrambling to keep up with the high priority calls. It (was) extremely busy and kind of dangerous.”

Additionally, Calgarians are seeing high amounts of damage due to golf-ball-sized hail in some areas.
