2 Edmonton junior high students accused of using AI to create sexualized images of classmates

Police say two Edmonton students have been charged after allegedly using artificial intelligence to make child sexual exploitation images of their classmates.

ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit says several students were victimized. Authorities are not identifying the Edmonton junior high school at the heart of the allegations.

ALERT alleges two 14-year-old boys “took photos of the girls without their consent, and also took photos from their social media accounts, in order to sexualize the images using AI software.”

Police say they were notified by a teacher in March following complaints from students.

The two boys were charged with making and possessing child sexual exploitation materials and voyeurism.

Edmonton Police Service and Zebra Child and Youth Advocacy Centre were involved in the investigation.

Police say this the second incident at school that ICE has investigated involving the use of AI and child sexual exploitation materials. In December, a Calgary high school student was charged after allegedly sexualizing photos of girls who attended Calgary-area high schools.
