10th new case of Dutch elm disease in Edmonton this summer

Edmonton came into this summer with a total of seven trees having tested positive for Dutch elm disease since the very first case was detected in August 2024.

The city has now detected 10 new cases in the past two months.

The latest: a tree downtown tested positive for the deadly fungal disease. It was was removed Aug. 14. The tree was located with 20 metres of an elm previously confirmed to have DED.

“Prompt removal of infected trees and any elms within 20 metres of them, along with a diligent pruning program to remove deadwood, helps reduce habitat for the beetles that spread the deadly fungus,” the city said in a news release.

There have now been 17 cases in Edmonton since that first case in August two years ago.
