Metallica takes over Edmonton this weekend

Elliott Knopp catches up with Metallica fans who say the price of admission was just out of reach, even in the nosebleeds.

Metallica is kicking off the first of two shows this weekend at Commonwealth Stadium and fans are already lined up in the afternoon to get in as heavy metal is taking over the city.

“Been waiting for this concert since they announced it two years ago. We’re on the floor tonight,” said one concertgoer.

Another saying, “It’s pretty cool Metallica fans don’t disappoint.”

As the heavy metal legends were warming up blocks south — which you could hear — fans were literally lined up around the block Friday afternoon in central Edmonton to get their hands on Metallica merchandise at a pop-up shop off 118th Avenue.

Not only is the band playing two shows on Friday and Sunday night at Commonwealth Stadium — where the band promises a no repeat set-list — and different opening bands on both nights.

But they’re taking over the city with Metallica-themed nights and bands at bars and music venues across the city.

And in case you’re wondering why fans would line up for merchandise they could get at the show.

“I want to see the concert. I’ve never been to an outdoor concert before only indoor, so this is wild.”

While some metal heads were seeing the band for their first time, others had been several times before, saying the music speaks to them.

“They’re just hardcore from the soul and they speak what everybody wants to hear.”

Tickets for both concerts are still available online through ticket re-seller StubHub and Ticketmaster.
