A woman who authorities say was causing a disturbance at a Mill Woods-area restaurant last month died in Edmonton police custody.
Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating the March 26 death.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officers were called about the woman who was reportedly “acting erratically, yelling, and frightening customers.”
Witnesses told police the woman ran into another nearby restaurant, where she hid in a washroom.
“Officers found and arrested her, then called paramedics to attend the scene. The woman did not cooperate with their attempts to assess her condition,” ASIRT said in an news release.
About 30 minutes after police were called, the woman was transported to the Edmonton police’s detainee management unit (DMU), which is designed to process and monitor at-risk or vulnerable detainees. During transport, the woman allegedly continued to behave erratically.
“Upon arrival, DMU staff found the woman unresponsive and called EMS to take her to the hospital, where she died shortly after,” ASIRT said.
Investigators are asking witnesses or anyone with footage to contact ASIRT at 780-644-1483.
