Edmonton’s heavy summer rains delay construction on big city projects

This summer’s record rain has impacted the timelines of some big construction projects in Edmonton, like the west leg of the Valley Line LRT.
Those delays were on city council’s radar Wednesday, with councillors hearing the heavy rains – the same that flooded roads, underpasses and basements – also left the ground too waterlogged for some construction work to go forward.
Serious and repeated flooding was a challenge for expanding Yellowhead Trail, for instance.
“I think yesterday it was talked about on Yellowhead how they’re looking at different solutions like closing intersections for a shorter period of time to be able to catch up on that work,” said Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack.
For Valley Line West builders, plans have shifted to finish summer work by the end of the year instead. For the Capital Line South stretch, some work will be extended into the winter or next year.
Mayor Knack says the city is looking at ways to make up time when rain has backlogged construction.
“The more we can do that the better,” he said. “I’ve been a strong proponent of this now for the last couple of years to say, ‘Let’s go in, get the work done as soon as possible.’ Because construction is tiresome and I know it has an impact on people.”
