Man convicted of brutal sexual assault in Lethbridge in 2016 to live in Edmonton after statutory release

A man convicted of brutally sexually assaulting a woman in southern Alberta a decade ago will live in Edmonton once he is released from prison, police are warning.

Denzel Dre Colton Bird, now 30, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars in 2018 after pleading guilty to randomly attacking a young woman who was on her way to work, leaving her close to dead in an alleyway garbage bin in Lethbridge on Sept. 30, 2016.

Bird admitted to hitting the then 25-year-old woman on the head with a metal pipe before sexually assaulting her. The victim spent a month in a medically induced coma in hospital and several more months recovering in hospital afterwards.

In a victim impact statement at sentencing, the woman said she sometimes wished she had died on the morning of the attack rather than live with the trauma caused by Bird.

Now the Edmonton Police Service is warning that Bird will be released under the supervision of the Correctional Service Canada. He will be living at a designated facility and bound by a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew. He’s forbidden from using drugs or alcohol and must report any relationship with women or girls to his parole supervisor.

The EPS says Bird is “assessed as presenting a significant risk of harm to members of the community.”

“The Edmonton Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation of related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform members of the community.”
