Correctional officers killed in collision near Edmonton mourned at weekend funerals

Family and friends gathered at a public funeral Sunday to mourn the 25-year-old correctional officer who was killed in a collision earlier this month.
Ramandeep Kaur Maan, who was from Winnipeg, was transporting an inmate from an Edmonton prison on Aug. 6 when she lost her life in a highway crash.

Sunday’s procession to the Edmonton Convention Centre signalled Maan’s final sendoff.
Inside, her father, speaking through an interpreter, said their family is now without a foundational pillar, one that helped bring them to Canada for a better life.
“I never worried about anything in my life because I always knew my daughter was there for me,” said Maan’s father.
“I never worried about my son either because I knew his sister would always be there for him.”
Maan’s brother described his late older sister as one of the greatest blessings in his life, calling her a protector, very intelligent, and with a strong sense of integrity. He said she was always lifting up her entire family as she pursued a career in corrections.
“She was planning my future while I was still trying to figure out my life,” said Kamalpreet Sing Maan. “She always wanted me to join corrections. She wanted to see me grow. She wanted to see me become successful. She wanted to see me get my PR. She wanted to see me build a good life.”
Maan was killed along with fellow correctional officer Nicolae Serban, 57, whose funeral was held on Saturday.
They were transporting an inmate from the Edmonton Institution for Women when they were said to be involved in a crash with a mid-sized box truck at the intersection of Highway 13 and 41. The inmate, 24-year-old Kiara Mooswa, also died.
The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries.
“From the time she was a child, I could see something special in my daughter,” Maan’s father said. “I believed that one day she would change our lives, and she did exactly the same. She made us incredibly proud.”
Canada’s Commissioner of the Correctional Service says an investigation into the collision is still ongoing and the fleet is undergoing an inspection.
“We’re looking into all the issues that are surrounding the incident,” said Talal Dakalbab. “We’re waiting for the finalization of the reports. As you could imagine, it’s a car-vehicle accident. RCMP and coroners and everybody’s working on it.”
