Sgt. Morgan Wong was one of the four Canadian Armed Forces members killed in the deadly CFB Wainwright fire. His bravery is now being remembered as friends and community are raising funds for his family.
Caring, funny, and generous – that’s how Hersh Srivastava describes the friend he’d known since junior high.
“He really cared about helping people out. You know, I think the military was an avenue for that for him. And he did a lot of community work apart from that,” said Srivastava, who helped organize the fundraiser. Other friends and organizers include Nirbhay Bondili, Adam Roth, and Anthony Yin.
Srivastava and Wong had a weekly tradition of going rock climbing at Edmonton gym Factory Climbing.
“He’d always just make sure that when we were back, we’d all hang out together, and he’d get us such nice gifts. Like, we were at Factory here and he got me so many climbing gifts.”
Srivastava says Wong was the solid core of his friend group, so much so that Wong was to be back in the city and even made plans with friends.

But now, after his tragic death, his friends are organizing a fundraiser to support Wong’s family members.
“Morgan’s father, Chek, has to take a lot of time off of work. Laura came over, his wife, came over from Latvia. She’s staying over. So Chek’s not working, but he has to support Laura and all the other family that’s come as well.”
As of Wednesday evening, the GoFundMe had raised more than $11,000 from its $100,000 goal.
Sgt. Wong’s memory is living on through the people and spaces he once spent time with.
“It’s good that we came here,” Srivastava said. “The Wednesday before it happened, we hung out. And the next day he was going to go back to Wainwright for his training. It’s just crazy to think that’s the last time I was going to see him.”
