Mounties say a police chase near the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary involving a suspected impaired driver on Tuesday came to an end when officers rammed the suspect’s pickup truck.
RCMP say officers tried stopping the truck on Highway 16 on the Saskatchewan side of Lloydminster, but the driver did not stop and he fled the area.
Authorities say the driver remained on the loose for about two hours.
Police tried using a spike strip during that time to bring the vehicle to a stop, but “the driver continued to flee,” RCMP said in a news release.
“Officers subsequently utilized a tactical vehicle contact to stop the vehicle.”
Police say one of their vehicles was rammed by the suspect’s pickup truck.
No members of the public or police officers were injured. Police did not indicate if the suspect sustained any injuries.
“The RCMP recognizes that police pursuits and attempts to stop fleeing vehicles can present significant risks to the public,” said Sgt. Christopher Byford of the Lloydminster RCMP in the news release. “Officers continually assess the circumstances and utilize available tactics and resources with the safety of the public, police officers, and the suspect as a priority.”
A 25-year-old from Medicine Hat was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance; flight from peace officer; refusal of lawful demand; and assaulting a police officer with a weapon.
He is scheduled to appear in court in Saskatchewan on Monday.
