Nenshi to seek Calgary seat in 2027, won’t run again in Edmonton riding

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi says he will not seek re-election in his Edmonton riding, opting instead to run in a Calgary riding in the next provincial election.
Nenshi announced the decision in a social media post on Thursday, saying he plans to run in the city where he was mayor for 11 years when Albertans go to the polls next year.
“I will seek election in Calgary to represent the communities in which I grew up and where I’ve made much up my professional and political life,” reads his post. “I also don’t mind saying that to give Albertans the government they deserve, we need to win more seats in Calgary.”
He did not identify which Calgary riding he intends to run in.
Earlier this month, four longtime NDP members revealed they will not seek re-election in 2027, including Calgary-Buffalo MLA Joe Ceci.
Nenshi won a byelection in Edmonton-Strathcona in June 2025, securing the seat held by former Alberta NDP leader and premier Rachel Notley.
Alberta’s next provincial election is scheduled for Oct. 18, 2027.
